Gitarist Primož Sukič en percussionist Ruben Orio kennen we nog van hun master na masteropleiding hedendaagse muziek en hun avantgardistische exploten met GAME. Dat ze samen als duo verder zouden gaan, stond in de sterren geschreven. Zij het dat hun fictieve derde man, the Third Guy, nooit ver weg is. In dit concert staan Sukič en Orio stil bij hun culturele identiteit. Sloveens en Spaans van geboorte zijn beiden offciële staatsburgers van de Europese Unie en maken ze deel uit van die Europese cultuur, waarvan sommigen beweren dat ze onder druk staat door uitheemse invloeden. Maar wat houdt die cultuur precies in? Nu de barok, het classicisme en zelfs het twintigste-eeuwse modernisme al een poosje achter ons liggen, is er niet langer sprake van een eenheidscultuur, niet in de Europese hedendaagse muziek en al evenmin in het algemeen. Zo voelen Sukič en Orio zich naar eigen zeggen meer verwant met de Marokkaanse cultuur dan pakweg de Deense. Eens te meer tonen de kusten van de Mare Nostrum zich dus een smeltkroes, ook wat hedendaagse muziek betreft.
Guitarist Primož Sukič and percussionist Ruben Orio are known to us from their master studies in contemporary music and their avantgarde exploits with GAME. It seemed written in the stars that they would continue as a duo, although that Third Guy is never far away. In this concert, Sukič and Orio take pause at their respective cultural identities. Slovenian and Spanish by birth, both are citizens of the European Union and part of that European culture, of which some claim that these are being undermined by external influences. But what exactly is that culture? Now that the Baroque, the Classical and even 20th-century Modernism are all behind us, there no longer seems to be a culture of unity, either in contemporary European music or in general. As they themselves say, Sukič and Orio can be just as inclined to feel a connection to Moroccan culture, for example, as Danish. Once again, the coasts of Mare Nostrum are the shores of a melting pot, certainly in terms of contemporary music.
