In Europa is het begin van de twintigste eeuw een periode van ongeziene omwentelingen. In Wenen verschijnt Arnold Schönberg op
het toneel. Hij beschouwt het als zijn taak de Duitse romantische muziektraditie van Wagner en Brahms samen te vatten en vanuit
deze synthese een fundamenteel nieuwe taal te creëren. De Kammersymphonie is qua taal nog hyperromantisch, maar bevat reeds kernen van zijn latere atonale beeldenstorm. Het was echter zijn leerling Alban Berg die de boeken zou ingaan als de meest lyrische van de Tweede Weense School. De kwintetversie van zijn pianosonate is van de hand van de jonge Brusselse componist Tim Mulleman. Met Sequenza XIV levert Luciano Berio een modernistisch portret van de cello, waarin zowat alle mogelijke technieken aan bod komen.
In Europe, the early twentieth century was a period of unseen upheavals. Arnold Schönberg appeared on stage in Vienna. He saw it as his task to summarize the German romantic musical tradition of Wagner and Brahms and, from this synthesis, to create a fundamentally new language. His ‘Kammersymphony’ still hyper-Romantic in terms of language, but already contains the nuclei of his later atonal iconoclasm. However, it was his pupil Alban Berg who would enter the books as the most lyrical of the Second Viennese School. The quintet version of his piano sonata is from the hand of the young Brussels composer, Tim Mulleman. With’ Sequenza XIV’ Luciano Berio delivers a modernist portrait of the cello in which almost every possible technique is encountered.
