Vandaag is een kruisbestuiving tussen kunstmuziek en jazz de normaalste zaak ter wereld, maar dat was in de eerste helft van de twintigste eeuw wel anders. De klassieke wereld vond jazz doorgaans onconventioneel en keurde het genre af omwille van zowel muzikale als even bekrompen sociale overweging. Uitzonderingen bevestigen gelukkig altijd de regel. Op het programma staan composities van Bohuslav Martinů, Erwin Schulhoff en Francis Poulenc, drie componisten die hun oren niet in hun zakken hadden zitten en zich maar wat graag bedronken aan dit nieuwe, opwindende fenomeen. Als rode draad klinken de tunes van jazzlegende Duke Ellington. Erik Desimpelaere bewerkte er enkele voor blazersensemble en piano en liet zich daarbij inspireren door zowel de originele jazzband-sound als de meer contrapuntische schriftuur van Europa. Et voilà: oceaan overbrugd, muren geslecht, synthese bereikt.
Today, cross-pollination between art music and jazz is the most normal thing in the world. In the first half of the twentieth century, however, it was a different story. The classical world generally found jazz unconventional and rejected the genre for both musical and ‒ equally narrow-minded ‒ social considerations. Fortunately, exceptions confirm the rule. This programme includes compositions by Bohuslav Martinů, Erwin Schulhoff and Francis Poulenc, three composers who did not have their ears in their pockets and who liked to imbibe on this new, exciting phenomenon. The tunes of jazz legend Duke Ellington resound as a common thread. Erik Desimpelaere arranged a few pieces for wind ensemble and piano and was inspired by both the original jazz band sound and the more contrapuntal writing of Europe. Et voilà: oceans bridged, walls torn down, synthesis achieved.
