Op aandringen van zijn ouders vertrok Felix Mendelssohn in april 1829 per stoomboot naar Engeland en Schotland. Bij Schotland kwam het schip in een zware storm terecht. De indrukken van het natuurgeweld is wat Mendelssohn inspireerde tot het componeren van zijn Symfonie 3 in a mineur opus 56.
De componist heeft er bijna vijftien jaar voor nodig gehad om het werk definitief te voltooiden. De bijnaam Schotse symfonie is vooral te danken aan het tweede deel, want daarin zijn nationale Schotse melodieën verwerkt. Zo imiteren de klarinet en de hobo bijvoorbeeld de doedelzak. In 1842 verovert Mendelssohn als componist Engeland. Het vorstenpaar koningin Victoria en prins Albert, inmiddels vrienden van de componist, smeken hem om de première van zijn Schotse symfonie in Engeland te laten opvoeren, aldus geschiedde in 1842.
Onder de deskundige leiding van het Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen en Martijn Dendievel zullen onze studenten werken aan het eerste deel uit deze Schotse symfonie. Het resultaat daarvan kunt u horen om 12:45 in de MIRY concertzaal.
At the urging of his parents, Felix Mendelssohn left for England and Scotland in April 1829 by steamboat. Close to Scotland, the ship landed in a severe storm. The impressions of natural violence inspired Mendelssohn to compose his Symphony 3 in a minor, opus 56.
It took the composer almost 15 years to complete the work definitively. The nickname Scottish symphony is mainly due to the second part in which national Scottish melodies are incorporated. The composer lets the clarinet and the oboe imitate the bagpipe. In 1842 Mendelssohn conquered England as a composer. The royal couple Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, now friends of the composer, beg him to have the premiere of his Scottish symphony in England, according to 1842.
